Why should you use onion juice on your hair?
Hair is made up of protein which is formed in the hair follicles as the cells mature, this fibrous protein is called Keratin and keratin gives hair its strength. Approximately 90 percent of the hair protein is made up of a long chain of amino acids. Studies have shown that hair loss can be linked to the absence of sulfur proteins in the scalp. Well it would please you to know that onions contain a special type of highly absorbable source of sulfur which helps with the formation of keratin in the hair which results in more hair growth and prevention of hair loss. This sulfur in onion juice can help hair follicles by boosting blood circulation not only for hair but in general. Onions contain vitamins and minerals that are beneficial and help with the growth of hair.
Some of these vitamins include;
- Vitamin C: this helps build Collagen which is very important for hair growth. It also plays an important role in absorbing iron, which keeps hair locks healthy and strong. Also low intake of vitamin C in your diet may result in dry or splitting hair.
- Vitamin B6: it aids in making the hair follicles melanin, which promotes hair growth and hair renewal.
- Vitamin A: all cells especially hair the fastest growing tissue in the human body need Vitamin A for growth. Vitamin A helps make an oily gland called Sebum, Sebum moisturizes the scalp and helps keep hair healthy. However too much of vitamin A can also cause hair loss.
Minerals include;
- Magnesium: it helps prevent calcium build ups on the scalp, when calcium clogs hair follicles your scalp would be dry. Magnesium counteracts with calcium improving the circulation and making sure it gets to where it is needed. It is also key because it helps with protein synthesis and better protein synthesis means better hair.
- Potassium: this helps reduce hair loss and is good for dry skin.
Research has shown that onions can help fight infections in the scalp, such as: dandruff, grey hair, dermatitis, lice etc. it also restores lost nutrients in your scalp thereby adding volume to your hair.
Worried about smelly hair?
I know onions has a very “not so friendly smell” you don’t however need to bother so much about that. All you need to do is combine water and apple cider vinegar and rinse your hair with it when you’re done with your onion juice hair treatment.
That my friends are the how and the why, it is also good to know that leaving the onion juice in your hair overnight is not advisable.
