Are Lagos Hairstylists Really Only for Lagos Big Girls? A Naija Blogger’s Take

Lagos, the city of big boys and bigger girls, is home to some of the most talented hairstylists in Nigeria. 

Now, I am not talking about big in the sense of the size of a person, but big in the sense of the size of the person’s wallet and spending habits. 

From braids to weaves to wigs, Lagos hairstylists are known for their creativity and expertise. But lately, there’s been a buzz on social media about Lagos hairstylists only serving rich girls. Is this really the case? Well, let’s take a closer look.

My inspiration to create this article begun when  Twitter user, @its_wendyy said she was ready to move to Owerri where she could have a frontal done for just N5k compared to Lagos where wig installs run customers up to N140,000.

She said

To install frontal in Owerri is 5k and the hair stylist is too good.
Maybe I will just move there because this Lagos is for big girls.

it made me wonder, Is it fair to compare these two cities though?

First of all, it’s important to note that Lagos is a cosmopolitan city with a high cost of living. So naturally, the prices of services and products in Lagos tend to be higher compared to other cities in Nigeria. This includes hairstyling services. So, it makes sense that the high cost of rent, electricity, and other expenses in Lagos can make it difficult for hairstylists to offer affordable services.

But @its_wendyy is not the only person complaining about the price of hairstyling in Lagos.

@bethfayemi and @theMonijesu have also raised concerns about price increases in the Lagos hair market.

You people are paying 140k to install your frontals in this Lagos?????

My own is, why you go carry hand go Island say you wan make hair now?

But if I think about it again, who knows, maybe that is where she stays?

But I’m sure even on the island, if one looks hard enough, there is a possibility you can find a hairstylist in your price range.

It is not fair to say that Lagos hairstylists only cater to big girls. There are plenty of hairstylists in Lagos who offer services at different price points to cater to different budgets. And for those who may not be able to afford a full wig installation or elaborate braids, there are still plenty of options, such as braiding only a portion of the hair or opting for a more affordable hair product.

Or for those of us that like to experiment, learn how to make your own hair. Last last.

Another factor to consider is the demand for high-end services in Lagos. There are many successful women in Lagos who want to look their best and are willing to pay top dollar for premium hairstyling services. This is probably one of the things that created a market for high-end hairstylists who offer top-notch services. However, this doesn’t mean that there’s a lack of affordable hairstyling options in Lagos.

It’s also worth mentioning that hairstylists in Lagos are some of the most skilled in Nigeria. They are known for their expertise and attention to detail, which is why many women are willing to pay a premium for their services. With years of experience and a talent for transforming hair, Lagos hairstylists have earned their reputation as some of the best in the business.
